We would like to say a huge thank you to Taylor Wimpey for their donation of £300 towards our sensory garden fundraising efforts!
We have been fundraising to transform an unused outdoor area into a fully accessible sensory garden for children with Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD) where they are able to grow and engage with . This project will create an inclusive space that supports sensory exploration, outdoor learning, and community engagement.
Outdoor learning offers significant benefits, including stress reduction, improved mental resilience, and enhanced cognitive and social development. Many of our pupils experience sensory processing challenges, and outdoor environments provide safe opportunities to explore sensory input beyond the constraints of a classroom. However, our current outdoor space is not accessible, excluding children with PMLD from these benefits.
The proposed garden will feature:
- Raised planters for wheelchair users
- Accessible outdoor tables
- Levelled ground for safe mobility
- Sensory-rich plants such as herbs and textured foliage
These elements will ensure full accessibility and provide diverse sensory experiences.
Beyond supporting our pupils, this space will be open to families and the wider community. We aim to foster inclusive participation, encouraging people of all ages and abilities to contribute to the care and growth of the garden. It is our hope that this will increase accessibility for children with PMLD, offer enhanced sensory learning opportunities, and foster stronger community engagement.
This project will create a safe, inclusive, and enriching environment for children with PMLD while strengthening community connections.
